COURSE OBJECTIVES:
• Participant will be aware of the impact falls have on the elderly.
• Participants will be able to identify extrinsic and intrinsic fall risk factors.
• Participants will be knowledgeable of the effect that various disease processes have on increasing the fall risk in the elderly.
• Participants will use a fall risk assessment form to pull the days information together, that they can take back to use at work the following day.
• Participants will return to work with an in-depth knowledge of risk factors for falls.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The first step in fall prevention for the elderly is being able to Identify the Fall Risks. In this seminar we will take an in-depth view of risk factors, extrinsic as well as intrinsic. We will be looking at shoe wear, various disease processes, decreased vision, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, orthostatic hypotension, nutrition, incontinence, pharmacology, drop attacks, restraints and other balance and mobility impairments. At the end of the day there will be small group case study work utilizing a form that will help bring today's information together for the participants, a form they can take home and begin using tomorrow with your patients. 6.5 clock hours.
COURSE SCHEDULE:
7:30 - 8:00 Coffee and registration/sign-in
8:00 - 11:15 Pre-test, facts and stats, concerns, overview of risk factors. Begin detailed look at risk factors.
11:15-12:15 Lunch on your own
12:15 - 4:00 Complete detailed look at risk factors, utilize fall risk form with group case study/presentation/post-test.
