E. Anne Melvin, PT. has been a practicing physical therapist for 30 years. She has worked in a variety of settings, 3 years as an instructor at the University of Central AR Department of Physical Therapy. It was there, that she taught her first course in geriatrics. After serving as director of a medical center physical therapy department in Louisiana, Anne and her husband, Wayne, began Melvin Physical Therapy in 1989. Melvin Physical Therapy, Inc. is primarily a contract company, contracting with local home health agencies and companies that provide P.T. services to extended care facilities. Anne has lectured in geriatrics throughout her career, including with Lagniappe Seminars since 2001 and has a genuine love for the elderly. She and Wayne have published patient education booklets in fall prevention, low vision tips and diabetes foot care, that are being used in clinics in multiple states. Anne stresses the need for multi-disciplinary approach to fall prevention. She believes that it is only with a multidisciplinary approach that the number of falls in the elderly can be reduced and by doing this, reducing premature mortality in this population. It is her hope that the participants will leave this seminar with new knowledge and skills that can be immediately put into use with not only their patients, but also with their friends, family members and elderly in their communities. |
